One of the most popular movies at the Vinton Palace is coming in stage form to the Vinton-Shellsburg High School auditorium this weekend.

"Shrek the Musical" opens at 7 p.m. Friday, with additional performances at 7 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.

Will Dudley plays the famous ogre; Alyssa Bunge is Fiona, the beautiful girl who turns into an ogre at midnight. Caleb Kruckenberg is Donkey, the talkative companion.

The musical is based on the first of the four Shrek movies, and tells the tale of how Shrek, in order to earn the deed to the swamp he shares with the fairy tale creatures, escorts Fiona to Lord Farquaad, who is set on marrying her.

Along with 40 VSHS students, nine younger children play the role of dwarves among the fairy tale characters.

"Tickets are $5 at the door – a bargain for this amazing musical delight! The drama department will also be selling Shrek ears for $5 to help offset the cost of staging this HUGE, GREEN production," says Director Marcy Horst.
