The Adventures of Tintin" is an ambitious and lively caper, miles smarter than your average 3D family film. -Roger Ebert

Once again, in a span of one month, Ebert sings the praises of his recent nemesis, 3D! The 3D he pulls off, just as Scorsese did in "Hugo," because he employs it as an enhancement to 2D instead of an attention-grabbing gimmick. –Ebert

Don’t take critic Roger Ebert’s word for it. Bring your family to see “The Adventures of Tintin in 3D” at the Palace, Friday, February 3 through Thursday, February 9 at 7 p.m., and Monday, February 6 at 2 p.m.

European comic character, Tintin, is a young newspaper reporter seeking stories with his sidekick dog, Snowy. In this particular episode, the first of three in a series, Tintin searches for treasure lost at sea four centuries ago.

“The Adventures of Tintin” is an animated family adventure, directed by Steven Spielberg, in the motion capture style of “Polar Express.” Running 107 minutes, and rated PG for adventure action violence, some drunkenness and brief smoking, “Tintin” is suitable for all but our youngest patrons.

STACKED WEEKEND

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” is absolutely not appropriate for impressionable viewers. Rated R for sex, violence, and sexual violence, most adults will be compelled to turn away from several graphic scenes in this movie.

Those of you who have read the three book Millennium series by now-deceased Scandinavian novelist, Stieg Larsson, will appreciate that the film follows the story closely. Modern heroine and unrecognized genius, hacker Lisbeth Salendar (Rooney Mara) survives horrific abuse as a child in the system. She later joins disgraced journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig) in his quest to find a missing woman and solve a decades-old crime.

Regular readers of my column will note that I was hesitant to bring this film to our family venue, hence the late show/matinee weekend schedule. “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” will show for THREE DAYS ONLY on Friday and Saturday, February 3 and 4 at 9 p.m., and Sunday, February 5 at 2 p.m.
