Vinton firefighters demonstrate with a smoke machine how smoke fills the area near the ceiling first. Students saw how smoke fills a room, from the ceiling down, and also learned how to turn on the nozzle of a fire hose during the annual visits to the Vinton Fire Station on Monday. Part of the local Fire Prevention Week Tradition, the educational activities also include visits by firemen to classrooms and Tuesday's rides on fire trucks for Kindergarten students. In the classroom, firemen discussed calling 911, as well as how to quickly get out of the house if a fire should start or a smoke detector begins sounding. The firemen also told the students about Operation E.D.I.T.H (Exit Drills in the Home),which encourages families to have an escape plan which includes a variety of exits and one central meeting place.
