Bob Baughman receives his Quilt of Valor from Ralph Osenbaugh, with the assistance of his grandson, Howard Heimstra.
As a young man from Warren County, Iowa, Bob Baughman went to Europe at the end of World War II. He arrived in Germany in 1945, after V-E Day, and served as an MP, guarding Axis prisoners. Later, Baughman, who eventually settled in the Garrison area, was present for part of the Nuremberg Nazi war crime trials. A book he received from that event is now being added to a collection of stories being compiled in honor of Warren County veterans.
Now a resident of theVinton Lutheran Home, Baughman has been awarded a veteran's Quilt of Valor.
Betty Carlson of Garrison nominated Baughman for the honor. Ralph Osenbaugh, the Cedar Rapids Area Quilts of Valor Coordinator, presented the quilt, sharing part of Baughman's story. Many family members and friends filled the Lutheran Home chapel for a ceremony on Saturday afternoon.
Carlson nominated Baughman after attending a Quilt of Honor presentation earlier this year in Cedar Rapids, where the recipients included Vinton natives D.J. and Josh Mulder. See the story of that presentation HERE.
