Led by the VSHS Student Senate, the annual tribute included songs by students of all schools, a memorial slide show of veterans who have died in the past year, and introductions of local veterans, who told the students their names, and when and where they served.
The special speakers were Keegan Birkicht and Randy French of Retrieving Freedom, the program that provides service dogs for veterans battling PTSD, as well as dogs for those with autism or diabetes.
French, a retired soldier and police officer, told the students how his dog, Windsor, will get up and turn on the light if French has a nightmare, and will be at
his side continually in social situations that may make him uncomfortable.
The ceremony makes Veterans Day one of the best of the year for both the school and the community, says Supt. Mary Jo Hainstock.
