By: Brittany Hansen, Co-Reporter On Tuesday April 25, 2017 the VS FFA chapter took 5 FFA members up to Calmar, to the John Deere building at Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) to compete in the District Ag Mechanics. There were five different practicums members had to compete in. The first one was Electrical Systems which included AC/DC power, electrical safety, electrical standards, sensing devices, electrical wiring, controls, electronics, motors, instructions and electrical loads. The second practicum was Environmental and Natural Resource Systems which was about water quality, sustainable agricultural practices, soil and water conservation and biological waste handling. The third area was Energy Systems which was about mechanical power, chemical power, wind power, solar power, hydraulic power, engine operation, maintenance and trouble-shooting repair. The fourth practicum was on Machinery and Equipment Systems which was about repair and maintenance, materials handling, processing, adjustments, and metal fabrication. The last practicum was Structural Systems which was about structures, storage, concrete, masonry, plumbing, electrical, fabrication, construction, building materials, ventilation, heating, and air conditioning. Amy Thomas competed as an individual, and Eric Henkle, Grant Ries, Trent McFatridge and Jakob long competed as a team. The group overall placed 12th out of 27 teams and individual places were as follows: Erc Henkle, Grant Ries, Trent McFatridge, Jakob Long, and Amy Thomas place 24th individually out of 93 individually. Congrats to all of them!
