Lyle Arthur "Artie" Fowler remains in jail on a $100,000 bond, following the Sept. 7 shooting incident in which he fired several shots in the direction of Vinton police Sergeant Ben Parmater and Officer Katlyn Schimerowski. The officers, according to the criminal complaint, were responding to a request for a welfare check on Fowler at 705 C Avenue in Vinton just before 8 p.m. that Friday night. Court documents indicate that Fowler exited his residence and shot a firearm toward Parmater and Schimerowski, who returned fire. Nobody was injured. The Class D felony charges that Fowler, 43, faces include two counts each of: Interference with official acts involving firearm, assault on a peace officer using a deadly weapon, and going armed with intent. Fowler's initial appearance was Sept. 10. His lawyer is Sara Smith of the Iowa Public Defender's Office. Several public safety officials have said that Fowler has told them he was not trying to harm the two officers, but was attempting to get them to shoot him. In April, Fowler was arrested for sending obscene materials to minors. That case is still also pending in Benton County District Court. He is accused of sending photos of his genitals to two minor females and requesting nude photos of them.
