In a news release from Benton County Sheriff David Upah, he released the following information.

On February 23rd, 2025, at 9:26 AM a report was received of a male subject firing a gun outside a residence in the 400 block of Lehnen St. Norway.

Deputies arrived and secured the area. Responding Deputies were able to confirm gunshots were being fired inside the home of 409 Lehnen St. Deputies were able to contact the homeowner, Nathan Varese, by phone. Negotiations for a surrender to law enforcement continued through the evening.

On February 24th at 2:32 AM a search warrant was executed with the assistance of the FBI Omaha SWAT. Nathan Varese surrendered to law enforcement at 3:15 AM.

Nathan Varese has been charged with the following crimes:

* Possession of Controlled Substance-Methamphetamine, 1st Offense

* Disorderly Conduct- Loud Raucous Noise

* Interfere with Official Acts, Armed with a Firearm

* Possession of Drug Paraphernalia

* Reckless Use of Firearm This incident remains under investigation.

The Benton County Sheriff's Office was assisted by the following agencies: FBI Omaha SWAT, Iowa State Patrol, Linn County Sheriff's Office, Iowa County Sheriff's Office, Norway First Responders, Blairstown Ambulance

All charges are subject to review by the Benton County Attorney's Office. An arrest or criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
