Garrison, like the vast majority of cities in Iowa, uses the Mayor-Council form of government. City elections in Iowa are held in odd numbered years. In Garrison, the term for Mayor is two years. The City Council terms are four years and are staggered, so that in one city election, three Council terms expire, and in the next city election two Council terms expire. The term of Council members Tina Rommann, Robert Decker and Alan Lindsey are up at the end of 2025.
The opportunity to run for political office is a privilege we enjoy in our society. To hold office in a city, a candidate must meet the same qualifications required to vote and be a resident of the city he or she plans to serve. For the 2025 election cycle, the filing period is from August 25 to September 18. Anyone wishing to have their name on the ballot to serve as Mayor or on the City Concil must completed two forms and submit them to the City Clerk during this filing period. The two forms are an Affidavit of Candidacy, which my be completed by the candidate and signed in the presence of a notary, and Nomination Petition, which must contain the signatures of at least ten eligible voters.
These forms are available from the City Clerk, from any courthouse in Iowa or by clicking here to open the Secretary of State website at City Elections/Iowa Secretary of State/Paul Pate.
