The Vinton--Shellsburg school election on a revenue purpose statement next Tuesday, Feb. 5, does not change any taxes; it merely gives the VS school board the authority to spend tax money the district receives from the state.

The ballot also includes a school board vacancy. Although the school board appointed Mike Timmermans to fill that vacancy in December, state law requires vacancies to be on the next school ballot. Therefore, that seat has been placed on the Feb. 5 ballot. Timmermans is the only candidate who filed papers for the election. Because the seat is to fill a vacancy, Timmermans would only serve until September, the next regular school board election, and would have to seek office again then.
