John L. Geater

VINTON -- John Lloyd Geater, 92, died Sunday, December 28, 2014, at Virginia Gay Nursing & Rehab in Vinton of natural causes.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 31, 2014, at Prairie Creek Christian Church in rural Vinton with Pastors David Arnold and Dennis Sackett officiating. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, December 30, at Van Steenhuyse-Russell Funeral Home in Vinton. Interment will be in Bear Creek Cemetery, rural Vinton.
John was born March 3, 1922, in Vinton, Iowa, the son of Ray and Hazel Edmonds Geater. He attended Harrison Country School #2 and graduated from Lincoln High School in Vinton in 1942.
On September 16, 1944, John was united in marriage with Irene Leona Price in Vinton. The couple made their home on their farm in Benton County. Irene preceded him in death on December 21, 2014.
He was a member of Prairie Creek Christian Church in rural Vinton. He enjoyed fishing and gardening.
John is survived by one son, Benny (Carol) Geater of Vinton; 4 grandchildren: Kris and Bradley (Jaye) Geater and JoLynne and Teri Richardson; 6 great-grandchildren: Crew, Ramsay, Jackson and Vivien Geater, Colin Menegay and Draeden Spang; one brother, Lyle (Lillian) Geater of Vinton; and 2 sisters, Zelda Bower and Mary Ellen Rogers, both of Vinton.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 70 years, Irene; one brother, Don Geater; and two sisters, Betty Linsey and Dorothy Yerkes.
A memorial fund has been established.
