SHELLSBURG: George H. Krambeer, Jr., 76, passed away on August 22, 2010 at his residence from a long battle with cancer.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:30 Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at Phillips Family Center, 605 2nd Ave. in Vinton with Chaplain Jeremy Hudson officiating. Interment will be held at Oakwood Cemetery in Shellsburg. Friends may register at the Family Center from 10:30 AM until service time on Wednesday.

George was born March 3, 1934 in Britt to George and Alice (Farmer) Krambeer. George graduated from Britt High School and worked as a mechanic for a local car dealer. He spent four years in the US Air Force. After working a year as a gas station attendant/mechanic, he was asked by the federal government to be an air traffic controller. He went to Omaha, NE for his training.

George married his home town girl, Marcella Olson, on September 16, 1960. In 1962 they started their family with a son, Cary, and then two daughters, Sandra and Rhonda.

George had several hobbies including feeding the birds, collecting hub caps, and raising different breeds of pigeons. He raced Homing Pigeons as a teen-ager, winning first and second place a couple of times. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and collecting caps. Most of all, he enjoyed his family and playing ball with grandchildren. George would tell jokes in his younger years.

After retiring in 1984 as a traffic controller, he was employed as a cashier at the Cedar Rapids Airport and a courier to the banks for a few years. He enjoyed old western movies and drinking tea.

He is survived by his wife, Marcella of Shellsburg; his son, Cary and special friend, Cindy of Cedar Rapids; his daughters, Sandra Krambeer of Shellsburg, Rhonda (Jeff) Sojka of Vinton; his grandchildren, Christopher Sojka, Ashley Sojka, Cody Sojka, and Colton Sojka, and Dustin Krambeer; and his sister, Pearl of Mankato, MN.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Marie, Clara, Alice, Florence, Vera and Dorothy; and his brothers, Clifford and Leo.
