VINTON: Alice Marie Berry, 94, formerly of the Vinton and Dysart area, died Wednesday, March 24, 2010 at Winslow House Care Center in Marion of complication due to Parkinson's Disease.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 AM, Monday, March 29, 2010 at Zion Lutheran Church in Dysart with Rev. Jim Radatz officiating. Graveside Services will be held at Evergreen Cemetery in Vinton at 1 PM on Monday. Friends may call at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 E. 6th St, in Vinton from 1:30 to 3:30 PM on Sunday and after 10 AM, Monday at the church in Dysart.
Alice was born June 1, 1915 at Lohrville, IA to Charles A. and Elfrieda (Henkel) Burger. On May 23, 1934 she was united in marriage to Paul L. Berry at Toledo, IA. Paul preceded her in death on February 1, 2004 the year they would have celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary.
Alice and Paul farmed and owned a restaurant and grocery store. Paul served as Sheriff of Benton County and Alice was a Matron at the Benton County Jail. She also was employed as custodian at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Waterloo. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Dysart, the order of Eastern Star and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Shriners. For 30 years she had been an avid bowler and attended the National Bowling Tournaments. In her leisure she enjoyed cooking and quilting.
She is survived by her son, Michael P. Berry of Cedar Falls; her daughter, Nancy (Ronald) Rieck of Center Point; ten grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, Paul, she was preceded in death by her daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Duane Mehlert; three brothers; and four sisters.
