VINTON: Verlus Eldon Gloede, 81, died Sunday, November 7, 2010 at the Vinton Lutheran Home following a brief illness.

A Mass Of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM, Thursday, November 11, 2010 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Vinton with Father Ardel Barta as Celebrant. Interment will be held at Holy Cross Cemetery near Keystone at 1 PM on Thursday, with Graveside Military Rites conducted by Merkel Bockholt American Legion Post #107 of Keystone. Friends may call at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 E. 6th St, on Wednesday from 3 to 7 PM, when a Scripture Service lead by Sister, Mary Hargrafen will begin. A Memorial Fund has been established.

Verlus was born June 17, 1929 in Benton County to Henry and Minnie (Schieb) Gloede and graduated from the Keystone High School in 1947.

On June 28,1949 he was united in marriage to Dorothy Pickart at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Vinton. He was inducted into the Armed Forces Of the United States on January 8, 1952 serving his nation in the Korean Conflict and was awarded a Purple Heart.

Following his honorable discharge, Verlus and Dorothy resided in the Keystone area until their retirement in 2002 when they moved to Lutheran Home Court in Vinton.

Verlus farmed for nine years, and ran the Texaco Station in Keystone for three years. Then he sold insurance for Farm Bureau and later worked for FMC in Cedar Rapids until he was laid off. Verlus then worked at the Keystone Savings Bank until he retired in 2002.

He is survived by his children, Deborah (Bob) Brecht of Keystone, Todd (Diane) Gloede of Vinton, Doreen (Cliff) Blanchard of Keystone and Amy Burroughs of Vinton; fourteen grandchildren; and thirteen great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his in-laws, Edward (Carol) Pickart of Vinton, Ilene (Herman) Paulsen of Keystone, John (Charlene) Pickart of Keystone, Richard (Dianne) Pickart of Van Horne, Mary (David) Schallau of Lincoln, NE, and Linda (Joe) Kaloupek of Elberon.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy; his parents, Henry and Minnie Gloede; his brother, Grant and one grandson, Jamie Blanchard.
