VINTON – Nick Montgomery, 66, died Monday, November 22, 2010, at his home in Vinton following a brief illness.

A memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 24, 2010, at Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church in Vinton with Pastor Mark C. Urlaub officiating. Visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. at the church.

A memorial service will also be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 27, 2010, at Memorial United Methodist Church in Gladstone, Michigan, with Rev. Steve Cowan officiating.

Nick was born January 5, 1944, in St. Paul, Minnesota, the son of Wilbur and Sharon Wood Montgomery. He was raised in Gladstone, MI, and graduated from Gladstone High School. He also graduated from Northern Michigan University, majoring in Industrial and Special Education.

Nick proudly served his country in the United States Army for 35 years, retiring in September 2008. He was a helicopter and airplane pilot and Aviation Safety Officer, flying 11 different types of aircraft. He traveled extensively while he was in the military, living in 7 states, and he was also stationed in Bolivia and Germany. He served in Vietnam and the Gulf War. He received the Distinguished Graduate of Aviator Class, Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, a Bronze Star and numerous Air medals. He was a member of the Flying Tigers, U.S. Helicopter Pilots Association and the Military Officers of America Association.

On July 8, 1967, Nick was united in marriage with Lynn Stenlund in Rapid River, MI.

Nick was a member of Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lions Club and the Country Club in Vinton. He volunteered at Vinton-Shellsburg schools. He enjoyed golfing, sailing, music, hunting and Green Bay Packers football.

Nick is survived by his wife of 43 years, Lynn of Vinton; one daughter, Jennifer (John) Engler of Garrison; one son, Jonathan Montgomery of Portland, OR; two grandchildren: Halie and John Frank Engler; one brother, Don (Kris) Montgomery of Escanaba, MI; and one sister, Karen (Pat) Perry of Reno, NV.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial fund has been established.

RR November 23, 2010, 9:25 am Nick was such a kind and caring professional. I had the priviledge of serving with him at Rock Island for 4 years. His contributions to the Army mission were most respectworthy. He left a legacy through word and deed. I will miss my \"Packers\" bud.

RR December 25, 2010, 4:06 pm I had the honor of serving twice with Nick, once in Illesheim Germany and the second time in IMCOM. He was a wonderful man. I mourn our loss. My heart goes out to Lynn and his family.
