SHELLSBURG: Lillian I. (Herman) Caldwell, 86, died Sunday, November 28, 2010 at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids following an extended illness.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 AM, Thursday, December 2, 2010 at Grace Community Church of God with Pastor Ed Kraft officiating. Interment will be held at Oakwood Cemetery in Shellsburg. Friends may call at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 E. 6th St. in Vinton from 4 to 7 PM on Wednesday. A Memorial Fund has been established.
Lillian was born January 27, 1924 near Amana to Anton and Mary (Svoboda) Herman. On October 27, 1956 she was united in marriage to Lyle Caldwell at Dubuque, IA. He preceded her in death on February 27, 2006.
Lillian was employed at Hawkeye Rubber Manufacturing in Cedar Rapids for almost forty years. Following her retirement she worked in the lunch room at Shellsburg Elementary School. She was a member of the former Grace Trinity Church in Shellsburg, Rebekah Lodge, and the Eagle's Club in Cedar Rapids. She loved flowers, gardening, birds, fishing, camping, and caring for the "old" people in her neighborhood. Her greatest joy came from spending time with her family.
She is survived by her children, Ben (Rosie) Caldwell of Newton, Karen Robbins of Shellsburg, Naomi (Don) Zeller of Hiawatha, Sandra (Doc) Booth of Palo, and Lylelene (Greg) Svoboda of Shellsburg; thirteen grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren and another expected in March.
Preceded in death by her parents and husband, Lillian was the last of eleven children born to Anton and Mary Herman.
