Edward James Gibney, 86, of Norway, Iowa, passed away Sunday, Dec. 30, 2018, at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids. Services will
be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Norway, with Father Craig Steimel officiating. Burial will take place at St. Patrick & Paul's Cemetery, Norway, with military honors. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, at the church parish hall. Memorials may be directed

Edward was born Aug. 21, 1932, to Tom and Elfie (Schmidt) Gibney in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He grew up on the family farm in rural Watkins, graduating from Norway High School. Following school, Ed was drafted into the U.S. Army, where he served in Austria. Upon returning from his service, Ed worked the family farm, purchasing it from his parents following his marriage to Mary Jane Schulte on May 17, 1955, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Norway. Along with farming, Ed worked at Kmart West in Cedar Rapids as security for 27 years. After retiring from farming 26 years ago, the couple moved to their home in Norway.
Ed had a passion for music and traveling with his wife, enjoying many trips to Branson, Mo. He liked playing cards, the Chicago Cubs, fishing and taking long walks around Norway. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family. He was very proud of his children and grandchildren, attending their many sporting events and activities. Ed will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor, kindness and generosity.
He was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, St. Michael's Church and the Norway American Legion.
Ed is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary Jane of Norway; daughter-in-law, Darlene Gibney; children, Connie (Alan) Benson and Carla (Bradley) Davidson, all of Cedar Rapids, and Carrie Gibney of Norway; grandchildren, Aaron (Molly) Voss, Amy (John) Palmer, Kaylee (Bill Monberg) Gibney, Alex Gibney, Chelsea (Nathan) Raymond and Justin (Samantha) Zaugg; great-grandchildren, Chloe, Matilda, Aviana and Robby; and siblings, Thomas (Ellen) Gibney of Toledo, Ohio, and Rosemary Trimble of Atkins.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents; and children, Ken Gibney and Christine Zaugg.
