James "Jim" D. Kirk, 90, passed away peacefully at his rural Vinton residence on Saturday, June 11, 2022. Private graveside services will be held at Evergreen Cemetery, Vinton. Van Steenhuyse-Teahen Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Jim was born June 21, 1931 at Vinton, the son of Albert and Mable (Jerolaman) Kirk. He attended school in Vinton, graduating in 1949, and then attended Iowa State University earning a degree in agriculture.

Following college, Jim proudly served in the U. S. Army for two years during the Korean conflict. As a result of completing the ROTC course while in college, Jim was directly commissioned to First Lieutenant.

Throughout his life, Jim enjoyed the company of three wives: Glenna Hanneman, Nicki Detels and Cheryl Stufflebeam, all of whom preceded him in death.

While fulfilling his passion for farming, Jim also served on the Benton County fair board, acquired his pilot's license and expressed his creativity in various projects. Of those projects, Jim's most cherished memory was when he traveled all over the world delivering grain for food aid projects through the United Nations.

Jim is survived by his daughter, Deborah Kirk of CO; two grandchildren: AJ and Carter Nadolsky; eight step-grandchildren; and sixteen step-great-grandchildren.

Jim was preceded in death by his son, Dan; and brother, David.

JNS June 13, 2022, 4:32 pm Rest In Peace Capt Kirk, the Enterprise and the Demo Derby, the Benton County Fair, watching you sniff for Easter Eggs with the Grandchildren, knowing we were coming on a hot summer weekend and you would have the pool ready and of course your player piano were a few fun memories. I have still never tasted sweet corn as sweet yours.

He was a great guy. Always had a smile on his face. I saw the obituary on Vinton Today, but I didn’t see anything about a visitation

BG June 20, 2022, 11:36 pm Debbie, and family, and all, So sorry to read and hear of the passing of Jim. James 'Tiberius' Kirk to end a long and such a valuable life. I remember him saying how he used to get phone calls from young people who would ask if he was Captain of the Starship Enterprise, ha. And they would ask about Spock, too. And he had his photo taken next to a combine harvester that he had entered in the Combine Demo Derby at the Fair. He was wearing a long sleeved t shirt that was decorated with the Starship emblem and his combine was decorated like the Enterprise. And we would talk about inventions that we wanted to further venture. And we were on the Fair Board, together. And we grew seed corn for the company that his father started. And so, so, so, many other things. The friends that we shared and the times that we loved. And he always would ask about Mac, and I sent this notice off to him, too. When Jim turned 80, I saw him and asked his age and when he told me, I said, "Congratulations! You are an Octogenarian!" It took him back, a bit, but this past year, he proudly told me that he had become 90! I congratulated him and was so happy to see that 'spark' and glisten in his eyes. That was the Jim Kirk that I knew, and loved, so much. And, I think we were both surprised to find that we were Democrats, during a Presidential year campaign, ha... Please convey my prayers and wishes and let him know that I wish I could have seen him, once more.
