Marshal White, age 85, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 4, 2022, with his family by his side.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, November 9, 2022 at Oak Grove Christian Church in rural Shellsburg. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery, Shellsburg. Visitation will be held from 4:00 until 7:00 PM, Tuesday, at the Phillips Funeral Home Chapel (212 E. 6th Street) in Vinton.
Marshal was born on March 10, 1937, in rural Benton County. He is the son of Leslie "Vern" and Mildred (Berry) White. He graduated from Shellsburg High School with the class of 1955. Marshal was united in marriage to Beverly Wilt on May 13, 1956, at the Oak Grove Christian Church. Beverly preceded him in death in April of 2020.
Marshal farmed in his early life and later attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids. He began his career working at Hiltbrunner's Music Company in Cedar Rapids. He owned and operated White's Poultry Farm near Shellsburg before starting his career in banking. During this time he worked out of the Shellsburg branch during multiple bank name changes, ultimately retiring from Wells Fargo Bank. Marshal was active in his community as a member of the Shellsburg Lions Club, The Shellsburg Area Community Group, and the Oak Grove Christian Church. He also served on the Shellsburg School Board and drove a bus for the district. He bred and raised coon hounds for many years, was owner and operator of White's Kennel and Supply, and also served as an American Kennel Club (AKC) judge. In his leisure time, Marshal enjoyed hunting, fishing, hunting mushrooms, and watching old western movies.
He is survived by his daughters, Laurie (John) Mayhew of Vinton, Lynda (Ruben) Ollinger Gonzalez of Cedar Rapids, Janine (Gale) Rowden of Shellsburg; 9 grandchildren, Brooke (Jason) Harmening of Mable, MN, J.D. (Leslie) White and Stacy (Reed) Williams both of Decorah IA, Drew (Jackie) White of Madison, WI, Hilary (Mike) Kastner of Cedar Rapids, Hanna (Mike) Thuesen of Cedar Falls, Matt (Morgan) Ollinger of Atkinson, NE, Whitney (Bob) Amos of Lisbon, and, Charitey (Daniel) Robar of Bothel, WA; 13 great-grandchildren; 3 step-great-grandchildren; and 2 brothers, Jim White of Florida, and Dean (Monika) White of Vinton.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son Alan, and daughter- in-law Deb White; son-in-law Mark Ollinger; granddaughter Stephanie Ollinger-Harry; and 2 sisters, Susan Teeple, and Janyce Fletcher.
