Darby D. Stein, age 64, died Thursday, February 2, 2023, at Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Tuesday, February 7, 2023, at the Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, (212 E. 6th Street) in Vinton, with Rev. Anne Williams officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Vinton. Visitation will be held from 4:00 until 8:00 PM on Monday at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established.
Darby was born on October 5, 1958, in Marengo, the son of Elmer and Beverly (Higgins) Stein. Darby graduated from Dysart-Geneseo High School with the class of 1977. On October 11, 1980, he was united in marriage to Renee Haefner at Trinity Lutheran Church in Vinton.
Darby worked as a carpenter with his father-in-law George Haefner from 1980 until George's death in 2009. He continued with Stein Construction, working with his son Brett and son-in-law Tyler, as well as local support from McDowell's Lumber Yard in Vinton.
Darby was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church. He enjoyed hiking with Renee and bicycling with Renee and his friends the "Alter Boys". He also enjoyed Friday night card club, playing euchre and pepper. His greatest joy was spending bleacher time, following his grandchildren's activities and sporting events. Darby loved to help others, both in his professional and private life.
Survivors include his wife, Renee; children, Lisa Stein, Brett (Jaime) Stein, Cindy (Tyler) Shaver; 6 grandchildren, Aza, Aiden, Wyatt, Tessa, Brianna, and Korbin, all of Vinton; 2 brothers, Greg (Cathy) Stein of Dysart, Randy (June) Stein of Ankeny; and 2 sisters, Brenda Krause of Marion, and Pam (Russ) Lawless of Waterloo.
He is preceded in death by his parents and father-in-law George Haefner.
