VINTON:  Robert Charles Werning, 80, died Tuesday, June 14, 2011 at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids from complications of a sudden illness.

     Friends may call at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 E. 6th St. in Vinton on Monday, June 20, 2011 from 4 to 7 pm.  A Graveside Service will be held at 11 am, Tuesday at Big Grove Cemetery, 2091 63rd Street south west of Vinton with Rev. Clarke E. Frederick officiating and Military Rites Conducted by Geo. G. Luckey American Legion Post #57 of Vinton and Iowa Funeral Military Honors.  A Memorial Fund has been estabished.

     Survivors include his wife, Darlene (Geiger) Werning of more than 59 years; his five children, Carol (Danny) Lee of Bethany, MO, Coleen (Bob) Lathrop of Cedar Rapids, Karen (Chuck) Fountain of Van Horne, John (Teresa) Werning of Urbana, and Darrell (Laurie) Werning of Vinton.  Also his eleven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, and two sisters, Eleanor (Raymond) Coffland of Van Horne, and Rosemarie (Joe) Marsh of Cedar Rapids.

     He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers-in-law.

     Robert Charles Werning was born July 2, 1930 in Vinton.  He was the son of Helen (Strellner) and Arnold Werning.  He graduated from Lincoln High School in Vinton.  He married Darlene Geiger on August 18, 1951.  He then worked at Wilson's Packing Plant until he was drafted by the U.S. Army.  He served in the Korean Conflict from 1952 - 1954.  Upon returning from the war, he and his wife started farming at Watkins.  Later, they moved to Newhall to farm before eventually settling at their present farm south of Vinton.  Robert has been retired from farming for several years now.

     He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Vinton.  He was also a former member of FFA and 4-H and a long time member of the Benton County Cattlemen and George G. Lucky American Legion Post #57 of Vinton. 

     He enjoyed farming, especially caring for his stock cow herd and calves and attending cattle sales.  Bob enjoyed attending productions at the Old Cremery Theater.  He also loved playing cards and attending his grandchildren's activities.  He was a devoted husband, dad, grampa, and great-grandpa.
