SHELLSBURG: William "Bill" Montgomery, 84, died Wednesday, April 11, 2012 at the Vinton Lutheran Home following an extended illness. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, April 16, 2012 at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 E. 6th St., in Vinton. Interment will be held at Oakwood Cemetery in Shellsburg with Graveside Military Rites Conducted by the Ray and Virginia Boyer American Legion Post #166 of Shellsburg and Iowa Military Funeral Honors. Friends may call at the funeral home from 3 to 5 p.m., on Sunday. Bill was born May 13, 1927 at Shellsburg to Frank C. and Dorothy Eva (Jarmon) Montgomery. During World War II he served his nation in the US Army. He was a member of the Ray and Virginia Boyer American Legion Post #166 of Shellsburg. In 1950 he married Bonnie Scott at Shellsburg and they have both been residents of the Vinton Lutheran Home since October of 2007. Bill was employed as a lineman with Farmers Mutual Telephone Co. about thirty years and he retired in 1992. He had also been a member of the Shellsburg Volunteer Fire Dept. In addition to his wife, Bonnie, he is survived by his daughters, Rhonda (Don) Pearson of Vinton, and Dawn (Steve) Spencer of Hiawatha; his son, Scott Montgomery and special friend Kim, of Sharpsburg, GA; his grandchildren, Tiffani, Stephanie, Michelle, Mitch and Holly; his great-grandchildren, Gage, Isabelle, Landon, Caitlin, Will, Kent and Baya; and his brother, Don Montgomery of Shellsburg. He was preceded in death by his parents. A Memorial Fund has been established. |
