Harold L. Evans, 87, died Sunday, June 10, 2012 at Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton following an extended illness.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 14, 2012 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Vinton with Rev. David Lingard officiating. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Vinton with graveside military rites conducted by Geo. G. Luckey American Legion Post #57 of Vinton. Friends may call at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 E. Sixth St., Vinton from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday. A memorial fund has been established.

Harold was born February 2, 1925 in Vinton to Elmer Phillip and Nora (McCaw) Evans and graduated from Vinton’s Lincoln High School in 1943. During World War II he served his nation in the Army Air Corps and was honorably discharged April 8, 1946.

He was a member of Geo. G. Luckey American Legion Post #57 of Vinton.

On April 6, 1947 he was united in marriage to Joan Goodell at Vinton.

From 1946 to 1973 he owned Modern Cleaners in Vinton and then served as a custodian for the Vinton School District, and later as a substitute mail carrier and a school bus driver.

Harold was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Vinton and will be remembered as a favorite soloist at his congregation.

He is survived by his wife, Joan, his daughter, Wendy (Dennis) Haefner, and his son, Mike (Tammie) Evans, all of Vinton; his grandchildren, Michael Johnson and Dan Johnson of Vinton, Erin (Travis) Kramer of Cedar Rapids, Jennifer (Brian) Fulgham of Wichita, Kan., and Michelle (Adam) Stephenson of Osceola, Iowa; his great-grandchildren, Kylee Kramer, Ethan Fulgham, and Aspen Stephenson; and four nephews and one niece.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister and one brother.

BA June 12, 2012, 6:43 pm I remember Harold since I was a kid driving the bus and known as a friendly person at east school every day , He was a grandpa to many kids who loved him he was always sharing hugs and was so kind to many my prayers are with joan and the family of the loss of a special friend god bless
