Ray L. Carman, 65, died Tuesday, July 10, 2012, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House in Hiawatha following a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 13, at the Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 E. Sixth St., Vinton. Interment will be held at the Urbana Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday.

A memorial fund has been established.

Ray was born Aug. 23, 1946, at Urbana, to J. Clifford and Lois E. (Strait) Carman and graduated from Urbana High School in 1964. On Sept. 5, 1981, he was united in marriage to Sue Sproston in Bertram, Iowa.

Ray was a lifelong farmer in the Urbana area and worked at Rockwell Collins as a plastics mold operator for 38 years. Ray loved farming and spending time with his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Sue of Urbana; his children, Bethany Carman of Urbana, Erin (Jeff) Gilson of Marion and Thomas (Candace) Carman of Urbana; three granddaughters, Jaydyn and Addyson Palmer and Reagan Gilson; his mother, Lois Carman of Vinton; his sister, Mary Ann Cue of Vinton; and his brother, Larry (Marguerite) Carman of Center Point.

He was preceded in death by his father, J. Clifford in 1991; his brother, Dean Carman; his brother-in-law, Warren Cue; and sister-in-law, Linda Waters.
