Dear Editor,

Ninth day plus of the Senator Schumer government shutdown.   What is the real rub?  A trillion and a half dollars subsidy to remotely make Obamacare remotely affordable. Funding for the same does not end till the end of the year, but no pay for soldiers, sailors, airmen, air traffic controllers, and others for now.   The rub is that the aforementioned people must report for duty whether they receive a paycheck or not.  I sympathize with these. While a working stiff I could not survive long without a monthly paycheck, now retired, same thing.

Subsidies for the Affordable Care Act can wait; those not paid but required to report for duty cannot.  This is nothing more than a temper tantrum by the Democrat Senate.  Senator Schumer – Get off the Dime!

One other note:  What may be occurring in the Middle East – PEACE; is historic.  Who would have thought this possible?  Many Presidents and Secretaries of State have tried, but failed.  President Trump and his team may have succeeded in getting the impossible.  Time will tell, but I am praying it is so; so should we all.

Blessings and salutations.

John Stiegelmeyer

So then you are ok with the white lower and middle class having to pay hundreds of dollars for insurance from the ACA or not have any insurance? I am sure they will be happy to know that.
GS October 14, 2025, 12:58 pm RS,
I used to be under the impression that democrats were smarter, then I read your comment.
You say that illegals "do not get free healthcare through the ACA" and "Something to remember if someone without insurance becomes ill or in an accident of some sort and have to go to the ER and then the hospital who do you think pays for their care? THE TAXPAYER."
Dear, dear RS. Who do you think is paying for the illegals in the country who use the ER like a doctors office? Oh that's right you said the TAXPAYER. There seems to be a disconnect between the definition of "the taxpayer" footing the bill and "the taxpayer" who is paying higher premiums supporting all the illegals that Biden welcomed in. Kudos to Tom Homen and all of the ICE agents out there lowering our healthcare costs!
RS October 14, 2025, 12:33 pm How many times to people have to be told that so called "illegals" do not get free health and are not allowed through the ACA to purchase insurance? Republicans beleive if you say a lie over and over it will not be a lie. All Republicans have to do is restore funding for subsudies for those on ACA so that their insurance will not go up so they cannot afford insurance. Something to remember if someone without insurance becomes ill or in an accident of some sort and have to go to the ER and then the hospital who do you think pays for their care? THE TAXPAYER.
MW October 13, 2025, 9:11 pm Hey, RB, do us a favor and look up how many votes would be required to end the debate. Republicans do not have that large of a majority. Meanwhile, Schmuker wants more than $1 trillion in government spending, $350 for continued covid scam spending, tax-payor funding for healthcare for illegals and half a billion for left-wing news outlets. We're already broke as a country. That needs fixed for future generations.
RB October 10, 2025, 6:24 pm Let’s see! President -Republicans; House -Republican; Senate - Republican. Who is responsible for the shutdown John? The speaker of the house sent everyone home so he doesn’t have to swear in the Arizona Democrat that would be the deciding vote on releasing the Epstein files. Does it bother you John, that our president might be a pedophile to go along with being a convicted felon and sexual assaulter? Where is your head?
DL October 10, 2025, 1:30 pm The death of the subsidies for the ACA, came about in The Big Ugly Bill signed earlier this year. Without some leverage, the Congress Members that voted for that bill, aren't likely to care about reversing a part of that ugliness. The only leverage possible, for the minority party, is to hold up the extension of the spending bill. It is extremely unfortunate that the innocent people involved, must suffer these consequences. Without this taking place, twenty-million innocent Americans will be priced out of health insurance. So, the if/or right now is between the federal workers having their pay delayed, or twenty-million Americans having their health insurance yanked away from them. How would you feel if Medicare was suddenly yanked away from us? House Republicans have, essentially, been on vacation since August 1. We already know that Congress only works about 10 days total, in November and December. This is the only time this can take place. The ugly healthcare part of the ugly bill, needs to be fixed now. The Republicans need to start talking. As said earlier, if not now, when? There is no time to satisfy that "when".
JG October 10, 2025, 7:54 am I think we can all agree peace in Israel and Palestine is a great thing. Hopefully it lasts for decades.
Interestingly, the last ceasefire between the 2 nations was on November 21, 2012 and was facilitated by Egyptian foreign minister Mohamed Kamel Amr, and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
God bless everyone on this great day.
ME October 10, 2025, 7:48 am If they can fund the ACA later, they can find it now. In normal shutdowns, the military, etc., will be made whole when it ends - under Mr. Bankruptcy, you might be right to be concerned.

I hope you're right about the Middle East, but we'll see.
