After scoring 17 runs in a losing effort in two games against Solon, the Vinton-Shellsburg baseball team swept a double-header by relying on pitching and defense. The Vikes defeated West Delaware, 2-0 and 3-1 on Friday.'
Coach Jim Struve offered the following summary of Friday's wins:
Game 1 vs. West Delaware
Vikings won 2-0 in a pitcher's duel over West Delaware at Viking Field Friday night. Conner Miracle threw 5 2/3 innings, allowed only 2 hits, and 5 strikeouts to get the Win and Tanner Davis got his first save of the year in 1 1/3 innings of no hit relief. Miracle and Davis competed throughout the game and made pitches when they needed to get outs. Wes Edwards led the Vikings with 2 hits and Cole Overton added an RBI Double. Will Edwards picked 2 guys off 1st base from his catcher position and Jared Thompson made 2 great plays by scooping the ball out of the dirt to stall any WD rally. Game 2 vs. West Delaware
Vikings Won the nightcap 3-1 with a fantastic pitching performance from David Bray. Getting his first start of the year, Bray threw a 5 hit complete game by locating his fastball and keeping the Hawks off-balance with his off speed pitches. Vikings defense played extremely well by executing a rundown in the first inning and Wes Edwards' diving catch in left field to keep the WD offense stymied. Vikings scored all 3 runs in the 3rd inning with back to back singles by Nathan Struve and Tanner Davis and executing a perfect steal of Home by Blake Bohnsack.
Vikngs are on the road Monday at Clear Creek-Amana and return Home Tuesday for a JV/ Varsity non-conference game against Oelwein.
