The 2016 Vinton-Shellsburg baseball season ended with a loss at Central DeWitt in the Sub-State game, as the Sabers defeated the Vikes 6-5 to earn a trip to last year's State Tournament. This season, however, VS defeated DeWitt twice 4-3, and 4-1, in a home double header on Thursday.
The Vikings also defeated Benton on Friday, 5-4 in a non-conference game.
Coach Jim Struve offered the following game summaries:
Game 1, DeWitt
6-16 Benton Game recap:
Vikings beat Benton Community 5-4 in a non-conference baseball game Friday night. Vikings were led by Wes and Will Edwards, as they each had a double and 2 hits apiece. Conner Miracle added 2 RBI's. David Bray threw 6 strong innings, allowing 5 hits to receive the Win and Tanner Davis came in the 7th inning with the tying run on 2nd base to pitch out of a jam to get the Save. The Viking defense played fantastic with no errors as Conner Miracle (center fielder) and Tanner Davis (2nd baseman) made several great defensive plays for the Vikes.
Vikings are 17-2 on the season and play Monday at Benton Community for a Conference DH. The team plays away games all this week, with bus trips to Hudson, Western Dubuque and Monticello on the schedule. The Vikes play at home next Monday vs. Williamsburg.
