The Viking swimmers completed a demanding four-day stretch with a dual meet split Thursday night at Waterloo against East High and Decorah. This was the Vikings third meet in four nights having travelled to Grinnell Monday and hosting East on Tuesday. Battling through tired legs and juggled line-up, Vinton-Shellsburg defeated a fired-up Waterloo East team 90 to 78 while falling to Decorah 106-64.
We have swam against these teams several times and with the guys a little tired from the two previous meets we went ahead and shifted our line-up around quite a bit. This gave our swimmers a chance to try out events that they either have never swam or haven’t swam very often. Despite the fatigue and line-up changes, the Vikes scored two more individual event wins with Matt Pettengill capturing the 200 Free by three tenths of a second and John Levis earning the victory in the 50 Free. The 200 Free Relay team of Rico Carneiro, Levis, Pettengill and Brandon Tharp also won a narrow victory over a Waterloo East squad that set their school record for the event while finishing a mere thirteen hundreths of a second behind the Vikings. Second place finishes included Carneiro in second in the 200 Individual Medley, Tharp in the 100 Fly, Levis in the 100 Breast and the 400 Free Relay team of Ben Stainbrook, Pettengill, Carneiro and Tharp. The team set 20 new personal best times to include Wes Lyons dropping a full second off his 50 free, Andy Newcomb swimming the 500 free and Sean Dulin and Josh Yerkes each taking several seconds off in the 100 Back.
The Vikings will next be in action at home on Tuesday, January 25th at the Braille School pool beginning at 4:45. Come on out and cheer on the team as they face Decorah in their final regular season meet.
