In their first event of the season, the Vinton-Shellsburg girls track team gave coach Heather Kalous reasons to look forward to a great year.

Competing against athletes from larger schools, several Vikettes placed at the ISU Girls Classic event on March 14. The Vikettes also earned two top-eight finishes.

"The girls proved that they will be a force this season," said Kalous. "They ran with 3A and 4A schools very competitively.  The freshman stepped up and ran their first varsity meet and the seniors provided great leadership to them. I am looking forward to a great year!"

Leading V-S were the 4 x 100 meter relay team (Cheyenne Barnes, Ashley Boyer, Erika Hammar, Shelby Beyer), which finished sixth. Erika Hammar placed eighth in the long jump.
