The Vinton-Shellsburg Red Cedar Shooters trap shooting team capped its successful season with a third place finish at the Iowa High School Trap Shooting Championship Saturday. More than 160 teams competed.
The Black Squad members (Bryce Burroughs, Curtis Geiger, Dalton Lebeda, Wyatt Lebeda and Drake Tilson, finished third with a total score of 462, only eight points behind first place Northwood-Kensett and five points behind second-place Ankeny.
Competition started Saturday morning at the Cedar Falls Gun Club where 865 shooters from across the entire state converged to compete. Vinton-Shellburg sent 3 full squads of 5 as well as three individual shooters.
Shooters qualify for the state shoot by competing in local shoots from March thru May attempting 200 qualifying targets. After a delayed start due to thunderstorms, V-S squads took the line and had record setting performaces. Highlights started with V-S Black Squad’s Bryce Burroughs (Jr.) shooting the team's top score of 95/100 targets. Not far behind were the Lebeda Brothers, Dalton(Sr.) and Wyatt(Fr.) shooting 94/100. Wyatt, however, also shot a new team record of the first 50 strait targets hit. Daniel Ervin also shot a 94/100 on the Gold Squad. Perfect 25/25 scores were recorded by Curtis Geiger, Dalton Lebeda, Daniel Ervin, and Tim Haerther. When the day concluded and 86,500 shot gun shells were fired, the V-S Black Team landed in 3rd Place in the State.
