Welcome to the 3rd week of points racing at the birthplace of the IMCA Modified. The show got a late start due to a passing shower late in the afternoon. Tonight was a special kid’s candy dash. Due to this shower, I was a little bit late to the track and missed the Hobby Stock and Sport Mod heats, anyway onto the show.

The first feature up was the IMCA Sport Compacts. 20 cars started the feature event with Bill Whalen, Jr taking off to the early lead from his inside 2nd row start. Whalen would lead the race flag to flag with no cautions to slow him down, Nathan Chandler, Brad Chandler, Justin Wacha, and Travis Losenicky rounded out the top 5. Heat winners were Whalen and Cody Swanson.

20 cars started the Hobby Stock feature, with Joe Sprague taking the early lead from the pole position start. Rod Grother would make his way past Sprague on lap 2 from his outside third row start. Two cautions would prevent Grother from building a substantial lead, but it would not deter Grother from taking the checkers. Doug Laughridge finished in second, with August Bach, Eric Stanton, and Scott Pippert rounding out the top 5. Back was penalized two positions for jumping the start after the 2nd caution and officially finished in 5th place. Justin Stander won the B Feature.

Next up were the IMCA Sport Mods. 24 Cars started the Sport Mod feature with Kyle Olson taking the lead from the outside front row starting spot. Jim Buhlman made his move into the lead on lap 4. On the very next lap Dakoda Sellers spun in turn 4 and Curt Hilmer couldn’t get slowed down enough tagging the Sellers car and breaking his own right front. Caution 2 would fly for a left rear spring coming off of one of the cars. Unfortunately it was from the Buhlman car and instead of risking any further damage, Buhlman took his car into the pits. This handed the lead over to points leader, Danny Dvorak. The final caution would fly for the Kaleb Bentley car who spun in turn 2 on lap 11. Dvorak would stay in front and take the feature win. Olson finished second with John Vanwechel, Austin Kaplan, and Rod McDonald the unofficial top 5.

The next feature to take to the track was the IMCA Stock Cars. 15 cars started the feature event. Paul Shepherd took the early lead. Three cautions would slow the field down with the biggest one happening on lap 3 involving the cars of Curtis Roster, Norman Chesmore, Jim Schaefer, and Brett Mather. All 4 cars would be sent to the back of the pack. Jason Deshaw got past Shepherd and held the lead until Scooter Dulin got by Deshaw with a handful of laps left to go. Justin Temeyer then got by Dulin with 2 laps to go and held on for the feature win. Dulin finished second. Damon Murty finished third. Jeff Mueller and 30C completed the top 5. Roster and Mueller were the heat race winners.

The final feature of the night was the “Knights of Thunder” IMCA Modifieds. 17 cars started the feature. John Thimmesch took the early lead in this event. 2 cautions would fly in this event. The first caution flew on lap 3 when it appeared that Mark Schulte got into the back of the Patrick Flannagan machine spinning him around in turn 3 and collecting the car of Brian Krall. On lap 6 Scott Hogan passed Thimmesch for the lead. The second and final caution flew for the Flannagan car who lost power in turn 3 on lap 17. At this time there was a great duel at the front between Hogan, Troy Cordes, and Max Corporon as they were battling with lap traffic.  After this restart with lap traffic out of the way it appeared like Corporon and Cordes were fighting over the same piece of real estate in turn 1 with Cordes getting spun out, but he kept going. Hogan took the win. The unofficial top 5 was Corporon, Schulte, Tony Olson, and Ron Lauritzen.

My tough luck award this week goes to Jim Buhlman for losing a spring while leading the feature and my driver of the week is Justin Temeyer for winning the Stock Car feature after starting last in the feature. Thanks again for reading another episode of Brian’s Views from the Grandstands.
