Darrell Lanigan continued his hot streak in the World of Outlaws Late Model Series, but it wasn’t without a fight. Lanigan, who held off Clint Smith throughout the second half of the Dirt Late Model Magazine 50, took his fifth straight series win at Independence Motor Speedway. The second heat winner, Lanigan redrew the pole position for the 50-lap feature and quickly took charge at the drop of the green. He immediately extended his advantage to a few car-lengths before caution slowed action on lap nine. Don O’Neal and Chris Simpson restarted directly behind the leader with Clint Smith one row behind them. Smith quickly swept past the outside of O’Neal in turns one and two before pulling alongside Simpson. The caution flag waved again on lap 18 before Smith could make his way into the runner-up spot. When racing resumed, Smith ran the top groove past Simpson, then worked to keep Lanigan in his sights. As the leaders encountered slower traffic on lap 28, Smith attempted to work the top line around Lanigan when caution slowed action once again. Smith chased Lanigan on the ensuing restart and challenged for numerous laps before making his bid for the lead exiting turn two on lap 42. Smith raced around the outside of the leader to take charge at the stripe, however Lanigan fought back to steal the lead the next time around the fast, smooth oval. Lanigan led the remainder of the event to score the win in thrilling fashion. Smith ran a close second ahead of O’Neal, Rick Eckert and Brian Birkhofer. Troy Cordes has suffered plenty of bad luck this season, but picked the right night to visit victory lane. Cordes drove to his first victory in Independence this season on a night the IMCA Modified winner’s share was $1,000. Pole-sitter Shawn Ryan led throughout the early going of the 25-lapper while Mark Schulte and Cordes made their way through traffic from respective third and fourth row starts. The leaders broke away from the pack in close formation until mechanical problems forced Ryan to the infield on lap 10. Cordes inherited the lead, then held off a hard-charging Mark Schulte down the stretch to take home the win. Richie Gustin, who came from the sixth row, finished third. J.D. Auringer ran fourth ahead of Kyle Brown, who started in the 10th row after qualifying through a last chance race.
