One of the best defenses in Class 3A is preparing to face the highest-scoring offense in tonight’s Sub-State 3 match-up.

While the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings are leading Class 3A in points scored (1,608), the Crestwood Cadets are among the best defenses in the state.

The Vikings average 69.9 points per game; the Crestwood defense has held its opponents to an average of 47.3 points per game. They are one of just a few teams to keep their opponents from scoring more than 1,000 points this season.

About Crestwood

Crestwood High School is part of the Winneshiek-Howard School District; the high school is about 20 miles west of Decorah and 20 miles south of the Iowa-Minnesota border.

The Cadets were ranked in the Top 10 when the Vikings first ascended to No. 1, but lost five games in January. They are now 16-5, and advanced to the Sub-State game by defeating Oelwein and Decorah in District action.

“They are a lot like us,” said Viking Coach Joe Johnson. “It should be a good match-up.”

The only common opponent the Vikings and Cadets have faced is Oelwein.

Crestwood defeated Oelwein twice in the regular season, by 12 and 15 points. They also defeated the Huskies by 19 in their District game. The Vikings ended their regular season by hosting Oelwein, winning by 15.

Tip-off at 8 tonight

The Vikings and Cadets are scheduled to tip off at 8 p.m. tonight in the McLeod Center, at the UNI campus, where the Panthers play their basketball games.
