The third sophomore pitcher of the game threw two scoreless innings to end a four-game losing streak for the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings Friday evening.

Alex Springer entered the game in the sixth inning, making his varsity debut against the Mount Vernon Mustangs. He held them scoreless for two innings, while the Vikings continued their comeback. The Vikings offense made Springer the game-winning pitcher, and his teamates gave him a game ball.

Down 7-2 early in the game, the Vikings used a combination of hits and Mustang throwing errors to score 10 answered runs, including five in the top of the seventh.

Sophomore Jake Dyson made his first varsity start, and he was relieved by sophomore Bryce Burroughs.

The Vikings had lost the first game of the double-header, 7-6. Catcher Matt DeVries led the Viking offense with two doubles in in that game.
