The Vinton-Shellsburg Middle School Expanded Learning Students shared lessons and food from several other countries with their fellow students last week.

Five displays were set up in the VSMS Media Room; students sent from display to display, hearing short presentations about those countries and sampling food made by the students and their families.

Katie Hancock and Brandon Price chose to teach others about Italy. Rachel Gordon gave a presentation about Greece. Jacob Gosse discussed Russia. Zach Uthoff spoke about England. Katie Langstraat discussed her native Korea.

The students wore costumes representing those countries, and showed photos and other items from those places. Gosse brought some art work from Russia, while Langstraat brought clothing from Korea, including a pair of shoes she had worn as a baby. Gordon and her mother made baklava; she said she chose Greece because she has always found that country to be interesting.

Price and Hancock worked together on Italy; the rest of the students created their own displays. Teacher Kathy Turner leads the VSMS ELP program. The students also recently toured the Old Capitol building in Iowa City as well as the Sullivan Brothers Museum and Grout Museum in Waterloo.
