On Sunday, October 5, the Presbyterian Church of Vinton will hold a Blessing of the Animals service at 4 p.m. on the church steps.

A Blessing of the Animals Service is a celebration of pets and animals and their importance in people’s lives. People are encouraged to bring their pets to receive a blessing, and to join together in a brief, half-hour worship service.

Treats for both animals and people will be provided after the service. Canopies will be set up in the event of rain. Everyone is invited to attend; pets should be on leashes, or in carriers of some kind.

The calendar date of the service is set based on the saint day of St. Francis of Assisi (observed October 4), who is reknown for his deep affection and care for animals and his care for the environment. St. Francis died October 3, 1226 C.E. Both Protestant and Catholic churches celebrate his saint day by holding special services to honor both pets and labor animals.

The Presbyterian Church is located at 608 First Avenue. More information can be found online at www.vintonpresbyterian.com.
