CPSC Issues Life-Saving Tips to Millions as Deadly Tornadoes Impact States

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is aware of the vast devastation caused by the deadly tornadoes that swept through multiple states over the weekend. With another round of severe weather, including possible tornadoes, threatening multiple states this week, CPSC is urging consumers to take steps to protect themselves and their families against carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning and fires.

Gov. Reynolds Signs Disaster Emergency Proclamation

Today, Governor Kim Reynolds issued a proclamation to ease restrictions on the transportation of materials related to disaster response and repairs.   The proclamation is effective April 1 and continues through May 1, 2023. The proclamation suspends the regulatory provisions of Iowa Code pertaining to movement of loads related to disaster repairs and for hours of service for crews and drivers delivering goods and services while responding to disaster sites.

Roundabout at Urbana to be closed beginning April 17

If you travel on Iowa 150 near Urbana you should be aware of an upcoming road closure. Beginning on Monday, April 17 until mid-May, weather permitting, crews will close the roundabout on Iowa 150 west of Urbana at the intersection with 31st Avenue and 55th Street in Benton County so crews can resume construction of concrete shoulders and work on erosion control.

VFW Shellsburg Patriotic Youth Essay winners named

this is a caption with text On Friday, March 31, 2023 our VFW and VFW Auxiliary presented Shellsburg Elementary School medals and certificates for their essay winners.We also presented Shellsburg Elementary School with a certificate of Appreciation for letting our organization come into their school to honor our Veterans and their families. Teachers also each received a certificate of appreciation.

Some of the essay winners Our Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW Auxiliary 8884) in Vinton holds an Elementary 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade Essay contest each year. The 5th grade students are all at Shellsburg along with 3rd, and 4th graders at Tilford. This year we had 106 third graders; 106 Fourth graders and 88 fifth graders in the two schools combined. A total of 300 students wrote essays for us.

Controlled burn on Wednesday evening causes motorists concern

A controlled burn near Urbana looked more serious than it really was. Residents traveling on Highway 150 near Urbana late in the evening on Wednesday night, saw flames, a lot of flames. The fire could be seen from miles away. The Urbana Fire Department was conducting a controlled burn in an area field located near the Urbana corner, north of the ECI REC offices.From the north and west sides of the highway, the fire looked pretty ominous.
