Milo Kearns honored by Quilts of Valor

Milo Kearns receives a Quilt of Valor in honor of his service Tuesday, the Vinton Public Library was the site of another awarding of a Quilt of Valor for a Vinton Serviceman. Milo Kearns served in the Navy on the USS Hornet from 1966 until 1970, during the Vietnam war. As with most veterans, he downplayed his service on the USS Hornet, but also proudly sported his shirt displaying a picture of his ship. He also showed his dog tag which was worn throughout his time in the service.

Advanced Animal Science Class Takes Field Trip to Kirkwood

Josh Wiley: Co-ReporterOn Tuesday, May 4th, students in the Vinton-Shellsburg Advanced Animal Science class took a half-day field trip to Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids. Throughout the day, students visited the pig and cattle learning farms, as well as Washington Hall on campus. The real life sow farm was a hands-on learning center for the students of Kirkwood, and they are continuously in the farm doing chores and completing tasks.

Aerial patrols of high voltage transmission lines to begin May 17

ITC Midwest will be conducting aerial patrols of high-voltage transmission structures and lines throughout its service territory from approximately May 17 – June 3, weather permitting. Helicopter patrols provide an overall status of the overhead transmission system owned and operated by ITC Midwest.The flights will be conducted in the Ames, Ankeny, Boone, Cedar Rapids, Dysart, Gladbrook, Iowa City Iowa Falls, Marengo, Marion, Marshalltown, Newton, Palo, Perry and Vinton areas.

Vinton Lions Club/Trees Forever/Frazier Nursery offering Trees

In response to last Summer’s derecho, the Vinton Lions Club is partnering with Trees Forever and Frazier Nursery to support the replacement of trees in the Vinton-Shellsburg School District area. 3,500 acre Solar Project in the plans at and around Duane Arnold

In a letter to area residents, Next Era Energy out of Florida has notified several Linn and Benton County landowners that they plan to construct three solar energy generation projects, totaling 3500 acres, at and around the Duane Arnold Nuclear Station in Palo. This plan would generate 690 megawatts of energy.In a letter to the residents, the company said that landowner participation is "voluntary.

Tree planted in honor of 8th Grader Brennen Still

Brennen Still On what would have been Brennen Still's 14th birthday, May 4th, the middle school students and the Still family gathered to plant a Sycamore tree in memory of Brennen. Brennen was the young man who courageously fought a battle with cancer and passed away earlier in the school year on September 29, 2020.In honor of his life, the students gathered as the principal, Shelly Peterson spoke about Brennan.

Vinton Lions Club visited by Benton County Conservation Director

At their April 28th meeting, the Vinton Lion's Club met the new Benton County Conservation Director, Shelby Williams. Shelby is a native of Iowa County and an ISU graduate. She's been busy leading the department since February as they get ready for the summer season. Her duties include overseeing all 22 properties the county owns as well as getting all the buildings and facilities ready to go for visitors.
