Vinton Lions Club tree order pick up this Saturday

If you have been chosen to receive a tree through the Vinton Lions Club, the distribution of the trees is this Saturday, June 5th at the Vinton Shellsburg High School Parking lot between 8 am and noon. When you drive up, a volunteer will be available to take your name and will have you draw a number that is assigned to one of the trees on the parking lot.

Vinton Legion holds Annual Memorial Day Service

Lt. Col. Constance Arens (Retired) addressed those gathered at the American Legion for Memorial Day The Vinton Legion George G. Luckey Post held their annual Memorial Day service at the Legion location. The service began by singing the Star-Spangled Banner and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance followed by the Post recognizing each branch of the military with their branch song and the members rising as it was played.Placing an empty chair in honor of the Prisoners of War and Missing in Action soldiers and placing a flag on it with the POW/MIA emblem on it, those present recognized those that have gone missing in action and those unaccounted for.

Miller fills Christian Ed Director at Wesley United Methodist Church

Kaitlynn Miller, Christian Education Director at Wesley United Methodist Church Kaitlynn Miller, has stepped into the position of the Christian Education Director at Wesley United Methodist Church. Part of her job has been to figure out a way to be entertaining while teaching teenagers. Another, not so fun part is of the job description is to find ways to raise money to support the youth and their endless energy. On Sunday the youth and the church as a whole celebrated their first fundraising effort which resulted in over $5,000 for the youth.

One Juvenile killed when struck by Stolen Car they were driving

The Linn County Sheriff's department released the following information concerning a high speed chase ending in Benton County. "On 5/31/21 at approximately 8:56 p.m. a Linn County Deputy located a vehicle that had been reported stolen out of Cedar Rapids on I-380 northbound south of Center Point. The Deputy activated his emergency lights and siren to initiate a traffic stop and the vehicle failed to pull over and led the Deputy on a pursuit.

Emma WileyMy name is Emma Jo Wiley. I am the daughter of Todd and Denise Wiley and sister to Drew, Isaac, and Josh Wiley. We live on a family farm in northeast Benton County. I will be graduating from Vinton Shellsburg High School in May and plan to attend DMACC in Ankeny this fall, pursuing an AAS degree in Business. My community involvement includes being a member of the Harrison Willing Workers 4-H club for 9 years, as well as being an active member of the Wesley United Methodist Church in Vinton where I have been involved in youth group, Sunday morning services, and Wednesday night meals.

Emma Arnold Emma ArnoldMy name is Emma Arnold, daughter of David Arnold and Sara Yedlik. I live on an acreage apart of my family’s farm outside of Vinton. I am a Senior at the Vinton-Shellsburg High School and I will be graduating at the end of May. My plans after high school is to attend Hawkeye community college majoring in Agriculture Business Management. I plan to transfer to Iowa State to major in Agriculture Education.

Julia SchultisMy name is Julia Shutlis. I am the daughter of Robert and Kristine Shultis of Shellsburg. I have an older sister who attends Iowa State in Ames. I attend Vinton-Shellsburg High School and will graduate in May.Participating in a wide variety of activities and learning new things has been especially important to me. I have been involved in band for 6 years, Benton County Youth Council for 2 years, and choir for 1 year.

Rylee SashRylee Sash is the daughter of Kevin and MaryJo Sash and has two older sisters, Payton and Olivia Sash. She lives on a small farm outside of LaPorte City and currently attends Union High School. After high school, she plans on going to Iowa State to double major in Event Management and Hospitality Management.In school, she is involved in the fall play, spring musical, dance team, group speech, individual speech, Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP), band, choir, color guard, FFA, National Honors Society, and the volunteer program.
