FFA Week Announced

By Josh Wiley, Co-ReporterComing up on February 22nd through February 26th, the Vinton - Shellsburg FFA Chapter will be participating in various FFA activities throughout the week. This week is known as FFA week across the country where every chapter will be participating in various activities. The school dress up days are Monday: Hunting/Fishing, Tuesday: ‘Merica, Wednesday: Blue and Gold/Official Dress, Thursday: Mullets and Flannels, and Friday: Career Day.

School Passes 100th Day

These 100 year olds are a testimony to just how hard school can be on a kid! If you happened to stop in at the school on Monday, you would be able to see how hard the year has been on the children and teachers. Everyone aged to 100 years old!Of course, it's part of the celebration of the 100th day of school. Pictured below are the Tilford students of Ms. Martinez's class.

Vinton's Inductee into the Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame passes away at age 97

Vinton lost one of its sports heroes this week. Merle Roths an inductee into the Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame passed away on Monday at the Lutheran home. In 1941, Roths won the 105-pound wrestling championship. He was also a three-time place winner at the state level for the Chickasaws 1940s.He was unbeatable in 1940 until he reached the state finals.

Let’s Re-Tree!

 The Benton County Soil & Water Conservation District is once again offering trees and tree seedlings for sale.  This might be your opportunity to replace windbreaks or shade trees impacted by last August’s Derecho or to establish new windbreaks, shade trees, or wildlife habitat. This program will offer both evergreen and deciduous trees and shrubs for sale as either potted stock or bare-root seedlings.

State and District Officers visit V-S FFA Chapter

By Josh Wiley, Co-Reporter On Friday, January 22nd, Carson Brincks and Avery Hanaway visited our chapter and led the students through various leadership and knowledge activities. Carson is a state officer, representing the northeast district of the state of Iowa. Avery is a district officer on the northeast district officer team representing the southwest sub-district of the northeast district, where our chapter is located as well.

Iowa Snowdrifters Save Lives

Groomers as they are known, were part of the rescue efforts for many stranded on Highway 30 Iowa Snowdrifters, a group that operates in Benton, Johnson, and Iowa counties with a few participants from Linn county, is a social group of snowmobilers who enjoy the winter weather. Snowdrifters is a non-profit club that supports snowmobiling around Cedar Rapids and Iowa City. The group began in the mid 1970s. Membership in the group is around 100 member and they cover approximately 220 miles of trail.

Alliant Energy reminds customers to stay safe as winter storm brings bitter cold

Alliant Energy reminds customers about some common tips to help keep warm and safe during the expected below zero temperatures. The company also wants customers to know that they are prepared to keep the lights on and gas flowing during the upcoming bitter cold days. Here are eight tips to stay warm and safe during colder than normal winter weather:Make sure space heaters are properly vented and placed at least three feet away from other objects.

Students make the day of Vinton Lutheran Home Residents

Students of Megan Albertsen combined their efforts to make the day of Lutheran Home Residents P.E. teacher, Megan Albertsen accompanied about 20 students to the Vinton Lutheran Home on Tuesday. Making multiple trips with students, Albertsen took the groups on a walk to the snow-filled lawn at the Lutheran Home campus and the children built several creations for the residents to enjoy. The students enjoyed the opportunity to make the residents happy and the residents enjoyed the visit through the window.

Benton County among Grant Winners for Historic Preservation

The State Historic Preservation Office, a bureau of the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs, awarded the grants through its Certified Local Government program for historic preservation, which encourages governmental partnerships, provides training and technical assistance, and supports preservation of historic resources at the local level.

V-S provides Free Breakfast and Lunch to ALL Students including virtual learners

Vinton-Shellsburg CSD is able to provide Free Breakfast and Lunch for all students, this includes virtual learners.To qualify for the free meals students must be enrolled in the Vinton-Shellsburg CSD.You will be provided an equal number of Breakfast and Lunches for “in-session” school days.This form must be completed weekly by Tuesdays at 10:15 A.
