Winter weather affects first VSHS 'spring' athletic events; schedule listed

The winter weather has already affected the first two track and field events for Vinton-Shellsburg High School athletes. The Vikings and Vikettes were not able to participate in the indoor WaMaC meet March 18, at Cornell College in Mount Vernon. The girls were en route when bad roads forced the bus driver to turn around; coach Aric Chvala and the administrative staff then decided not to send the boys team, either.

State Basketball: Harlan defeats Vikings with size, free throws

Giant at State: 6'-6 First, Harlan got to state by defeating the second-ranked Class 3A basketball team. On Tuesday, they knocked off No. 1. Harlan ended the Vinton-Shellsburg dream of a perfect state championship season with a 67-56 win over the Vikings Tuesday at the state basketball tournament. Led by 6-foot, six-inch junior Trey Lansman, the Harlan Cyclones blocked seven Vinton-Shellsburg shots and out-rebounded the Vikings, 35-28.

Players say coach Johnson is teaching them to succeed on and off the court

The Vikings and Coach J celebrate with the State Tournament banner after winning Sub-State game. One year ago today, Vinton-Shellsburg Basketball coach Joe Johnson was named the 2012 WaMaC West Basketball Coach of the Year, joining three players -- then-juniors Grant Sagan, Max Kearns and Max Griffith on the All-Conference First Team. That celebration was tainted with disappointment, as the Vikings had lost two days earlier to Western Dubuque in the Sub-State final.

The cost is $40 for the session and the last day to register without incurring a $3 late fee is TODAY (Thursday, February 28) so hurry in if you are interested.

Only seven seats left on second VPRD bus to State Basketball

I wanted to let you know about some details regarding our second bus. We have secured a second bus for the trip on Tuesday, March 5th to watch the boys play in Des Moines. This bus trip has also been helped out by sponsors to help defray the cost. The second bus is $20 per ticket and includes all the amenities of the first (transportation, ticket to the game, parking cost, brown sack supper).

Snowed in: 1982-83 Vikings recall a night in the Marion gym

With the snow on the way and Vinton scheduled to play a game in Marion, it brought up a memory from high school that seemed fitting. I can remember being on the bus going to the game that day and already seeing snow starting to drift. I was on the floor in the 4th quarter when they stopped play and made an announcement over the loudspeaker that the weather was bad and our basketball team would be spending the night in Marion.

Vikings to face coach with most State experience in Iowa history

Don't let the six losses fool you: Harlan is a very good high school basketball team with a very rich history. Although the Cyclones are seeded eighth, two of their losses came by a combined five points to Atlantic, which was ranked second -- right behind Vinton-Shellsburg -- for most of the year. The Cyclones "stunned" Atlantic in Sub-State action, according to the headline on the KMALAND radio station web site, defeating them 52-43 in their Sub-State contest.
