Viking Griffith nominated for KCRG Athlete of the Week

After going 8 for 9 from the 3-point line in Friday's victory, Vinton-Shellsburg's Max Griffith was nominated as the KCRG TV-9 Athlete of the Week, along with two others. Voting is underway now, and VS fans are encouraged to vote for Max HERE.

Vikings start slow, but win again, 70-48

Chris Merchant drives toward the basket; the Vikings defeated Marion, 70-48. The Vinton-Shellsburg basketball team struggled early against Marion; the Vikings went nearly four minutes before scoring and ended the first quarter down, 10-9, to the Indians. The Vikings struggled for a couple minutes in the second quarter until two consecutive 3-point shots by Max Griffith turned a three-point deficit to a 19-16 lead on their home court.

Trev Hadachek selected to participate in 2013 Iowa Shrine Bowl

    Senior WR/DB Trev Hadachek has been selected to play in the 2013 Iowa Shrine Bowl this summer.   The game has been moved from ISU's campus to the UNI Dome.    Hadachek will suit up for the North side as they game features Iowa's top players north of highway 30 versus the best south of highway 30.

Heckt becomes 1st of Union football team to commit to playing college football

  Senior co-captain Tanner Heckt  verbally committed to play football at Buena Vista University today.   Tanner, 6'5, 230lbs, is part of a senior class that won a 2A district title, a 3A state championship, and had a combined 21 wins in the last two seasons.   Heckt was a first team 2A D3 all district performer for the Knights at offensive tackle.

Vikings make it 14 straight; win 69-51 as Griffith hits 8 3-point shots

Max Griffith hit 8 3-pointers to score 24 in Vikings' 14th win Friday in Vinton. Max Griffith helped propel the Viking to an early lead by connecting on his first four 3-point attempts in the first quarter of the Vikings' basketball game versus Clear Creek Amana. Griffith was hot from behind the arc throughout Friday's game, hitting 8 of 9 attempts. Grant Sagan, however, led the Vikings, scoring 25 in the 69-51 V-S victory.

'Average' victory for top-ranked, Vikings: Win, 73-53 at Indee

For a season that is already earning adjectives like "historic" and "exceptional," the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings' 73-53 win at Independence Tuesday was about average. As in: The top-ranked, undefeated Vikings continue to lead Class 3A in the points differential category, winning their 13 games by an average of 22 points.

Vikettes rally falls short, lose 44-36

Down by 8 after a first quarter Independence rally, the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikettes played the Mustangs even for the next three quarters, but could not overcome that early deficit. The Mustangs won, 44-36. Freshman Anna Sagan led the Vikettes with 10 points. Bethany Stainbrook scored 8 and also led the Vikettes in rebounding with 5. VS travels to Clear Creek-Amana on Friday.
