12 years old Entrepreneur looks into the future, and he's got plans
Sometimes the Benton County Fair is just a time to show off your talent. Other times it's a stepping stone to becoming an entrepreneur. For 12-year-old Cole Birker, he hopes to make a little profit from his creation. Cole has goals and he's figured out that if he can create income, he can reach those goals much faster. Birker received a ton of positive feedback on a chair that he build and entered into the fair. Vandalism hits area Churches
At the end of May, a couple of area churches were hit with minor vandalism on a Saturday night. Just in time for parishioners to arrive and see it on Sunday morning. As one of the pastors said, "I can't argue with any of it. Love IS love. Women's rights are human rights. But I can't figure out where the 'Climate change is real' comes in, we've never said anything about that. Note About Email Address Updates

Happy 4th of July from a Young Artist
As part of Vinton Unlimited's Chalk it Up event on Saturday, young Emry Welper, a local nine-year-old, thought that the sidewalk in front of LaGrange Pharmacy in downtown Vinton. Saturday morning he got out the chalk and added a bit of a patriotic touch to the sidewalk. He drew a flag and a soldier saluting the flag along with the words "God Bless America" for his art selection EJ is the son of Cory and Katelyn Welper. By Gabby PowerOn June 22-26th, the great Benton County Fair was held at the fairgrounds in Vinton. Vinton-Shellsburg FFA members kept very busy throughout the fair doing a variety of activities. Members could be found at various food booths throughout the fair including the Dairy, Cattlemen, and some even volunteered at the Pork Producers. The FFA Barn was alive and robust each day from 9:00 A. Independence Day Weekend - No Email on Friday or Monday

The First Bacon Buddies Pig Show arrived at the 2022 Benton County Fair
The Bacon Buddies arrived at the Benton County Fair on Friday bringing participants from the area. Bacon Buddies was actually first held at the Iowa State Fair. Local students Clayton and Will McKenna applied to be Mentors for the program last year and were among several hundred that had applied. Seeing that this was a great idea, their mom Nichole took the idea and ran with it bringing it to the Benton County Fair for the fist time this year. Benton County Board of Supervisor Minutes 6/24/22

Vinton-Shellsburg FFA members excel at Summer CDEs
In June, various FFA members shined in various Career Development Events. On Tuesday, June 14th, 7 members traveled to Kirkwood Community College for Livestock Judging and Floriculture. Results are as followed:District Livestock Judging (Clayton McKenna, Kail Evans, Andrew Pingenot) - Team 6th, Clayton 5th IndividualState Floriculture (Paul Herger, Rachel Rollinger, Izzie Birker, Megan Schlitter) - Team SilverOn Thursday, June 16th, 7 members were hosted by Iowa State for Food Science and Ag Mechanics.
