A monster of an idea was hatched by some creative geniuses who had the foresight to connect two special groups of people. The 2nd grade students at Tilford Elementary, along with the help of teachers Mr. Larson and Mrs. Sturtz were given the assignment to have students draw a picture of a monster. Any kind of monster. The students had no idea why. Their drawings were collected and secretly sent off to the Vinton-Shellsburg's High School Family and Consumer Sciences class.

On Tuesday, Matt Boggess, Director of Vinton Parks and Recreation Department, shared an update on the situation at Riverside Park. Damage to the park equipment itself. The total cost to replace the structure is going to be a little over $200,000. Insurance will be covering 100% of the replacement costs. The cost to replace the burned truck has not yet been determined.

The Benton County Board of Supervisors declared the Month of May as Crisis Intervention Awareness Month! Nationally, May is Mental Health Awareness Month. In support of that, and the enormous increase, utility, and importance of teams and services that provide crisis intervention.The Benton County Critical Incident Stress Management Team (BCCISM) assists our first responders’; Fire, law enforcement, emergency medical services, and 911 dispatchers after they have experienced a critical incident.

Two Vinton residents stood in front of the Vinton Library board representing others from the town. Brooke Kruckenberg and Deb Hesson presented requests to the Vinton Public Library in both March and April, respectively. The two asked that the library consider the books that are made into displays and also requested publication of the upcoming books that would be used in the weekly Storytime.

Those receiving the award under the guidance of VSCSD Spanish instructor Michele Lash include Zena Aragon, Natalie Armstrong, Carly Bendull, Katelyn Hyland, Samantha Walton, and Jozee White.

UPDATED: On May 14, 2022, at around 02:54AM, The Vinton Fire Department and the Vinton Police Department responded to a report of a fire north of the swimming pool. One of the Vinton Parks and Recreation vehicles was fully engulfed with fire as well as the main playground equipment at the Riverside Park “ninja park”. The vehicle and the playground equipment were a total loss.

The Vinton-Shellsburg Community School Foundation is in its 26th year of supporting graduating students with scholarships and providing opportunities for students from PK-12th grade. Many generous people have given funds for the benefit of generations to come, and this year the Foundation wishes to recognize those people and share their stories. Tony Bopp created a scholarship fund in honor of his late wife Jill Lockard-Bopp, to support students pursuing post-secondary education in the performing arts.

The Vinton Police Department, welcomed Officer Isacc Kelly who was sworn in at Thursday night’s City Council meeting. Officer Kelly arrived here from Marengo. Mayor Bud Maynard gave the oath of office to Officer Kelly.

By: Co-Reporters, Grace Schminke and Alana FlemingOn Wednesday, May 4th, The Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter worked with the Benton Community and Belle Plaine FFA Chapters to educate 3rd Graders throughout Benton County on several different agricultural aspects. The members of the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter taught students about Pigs, Poultry, Rabbits, and assisted with Horses.
