Knights of Columbus Tootsie Roll Drive

The Vinton Knights of Columbus would like to thank the local communities for their generous support of our 2021 Tootsie Roll Drive.  With your support, we were able to generate just over $2300 for support for the intellectually disabled.  This represents our most successful campaign ever.  On Thursday night, the Knights presented checks to Vinton Shellsburg United Special Olympics and the ARC of East Central Iowa for $1,035 each.

Santa and the Elves help the Salvation Army

You grabbed your list, and you hope that you didn't forget anything as you pull into the parking lot of Fareway. Then you spot them at the door. It's Santa, or maybe it's his elves, or maybe it's a family singing and dancing to Christmas music. Whoever you might see there, ringing the bell and raising funds for the Salvation Army is there to bring a smile to your face and a little Christmas cheer.

Holiday Lights Punch Card Winner Announced for Week 1

Vinton Unlimited announced the first winner of the Holiday Lights Punch Card drawing. The winner drawn for this week's winner was Barbara Greenlee who won $50 in Vinton Value Dollars. Each week, shoppers who visit the participating stores of Vinton and get their cards punched, can enter their cards for a drawing each week. The final drawing will be the week of December 27th, the same time that a grand prize winner will be drawn from all of the submitted cards over the past month.

Three administered Oath of Office before Council Meeting

Bethany Gates, taking the oath of office as the 4th Ward Council Member Two city council members were sworn in and took their seats on the city council on Thursday evening before the City Council Meeting began. Bethany Gates, 4th Ward Council Member was sworn in to fill the 4th Ward vacancy left by the death of councilman Nathan Hesson at the beginning of this year. Rylie Pflughaupt, At-Large Council Member was elected also to fill a vacant seat left when Brian Parr submitted a letter of resignation due to relocating outside the city limits.

Second Crash on Hwy 150 North this week

On 12-8-21, at about 2:47 PM, The Benton County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a motor vehicle crash north of Vinton on Hwy 150 at the intersection of 55th St Dr.  A southbound Ford pickup truck was rear-ended by a southbound Nissan.  The 2 occupants of the truck were both transported to area hospitals for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Clipper Corner donates $1,250 to Gifts of Hope

Clipper Corner participated in Round-Up for Hope through the month of October donating funds to support Gifts of Hope.VGH is thankful for the efforts of the Clipper Corner staff and the $1,250 donation supporting breast cancer awareness, women's health, and free access to mammograms. Accident North of Vinton Tuesday

Tuesday morning the Vinton Fire Department and the North Benton Ambulance responded to a semi turnover Tuesday morning, north of Vinton on highway 150, a semi left the road near the Brandon turnoff. For an unknown reason, the driver drifted off onto the shoulder, resulting in the semi rolling onto its side and came to rest in the ditch. The driver was freed from the vehicle by the Vinton Fire Department and taken to Virginia Gay by North Benton Ambulance for evaluation.

Benton County Man Wins $100,000 Lottery Prize

Greg Semelroth poses with his $100,000 in lottery winnings. Greg Semelroth of Atkins won the second top prize in the Iowa Lottery's "Holiday Magic" scratch game. He purchased his winning ticket at The Depot, 188 Park Ridge Road in Atkins, and claimed his prize Tuesday at the lottery's Cedar Rapids regional office.Holiday Magic is a $10 scratch game that features seven top prizes of $100,000 and overall odds of 1 in 2.

Ketchen recognized at Legacy Honor event held by Virginia Gay Hospital

VGH has a rich history of people that have given various donations of time, talents and expertise.One of these citizens is John KetchenI think John was destined to become part of VGH since his birth, which occurred many years ago at the original hospital site, the former Tilford academy on the corner of 13th street and 1st Ave., (where VanSteenhyse/Teahen funeral home is currently located)John is a Vinton native, leaving his hometown to attend the U of I, and after graduation moved to Florida to start his first job as VP of Fidelity Federal Savings & Loan in West Palm Beach.
