The local VFW post 8884 presented certificates to the essay winners in the Voice of Democracy Essay Contest. High school students were invited to participate and write on the topic of "America: Where do we go from here?” The Voice of Democracy is a script-writing program designed to give high school students the opportunity to
voice their opinion on a patriotic theme, which is chosen by the VFW Commander-in-Chief.
BENTON DEVELOPMENT GROUP - December 21st, 2021 1:19 am

Board members from Benton Development Group and Iowa County Community Development met on Friday to celebrate their new partnership with a symbolic ribbon cutting. The two groups met at Hannen Park near the boundary between the counties on Benton/Iowa road.The Benton and Iowa County organizations highlight the quality of life their rural counties offer, actively recruit new industry, and assist current businesses with issues ranging from expansion to workforce needs.

The room was full of some of the most famous names in children's games and toys.Barbie, Mickey Mouse, Paw Patrol, Hot Wheels, Parker Brothers board games and baby dolls.These and many more names, along with a variety of other toys, games, dolls and books were available for parents looking for Christmas presents for their children.And each of these gifts for area children was a gift from a Vinton area resident, part of the annual effort to make sure that every child has a chance to enjoy something new for Christmas.

Santa Claus stopped in to visit with area children at Pizza Ranch at Tuesday's meeting. Once a year the Vinton Kiwanis club provides lunch to several area children and teachers as part of their Christmas Party. Each year teachers recommend which students should meet with Santa. The teachers then compile a list of gift ideas that Santa might want to bring to the party.

Once again, the Cottage Garden Society pulls out all the stops and brings Christmas cheer to the community. This time their handiwork can be seen on the second floor of the courthouse. The tree that they decorated holds several handmade gingerbread houses and a garland made of peppermint. The red, white and blue theme of the tree is a traditional display for the courthouse.

Dennis Lausar, Vinton Lions Club President, and Alan Woodhouse presented a $500 check to Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) supporting Benton County First Responders and crisis interventions. Receiving the check is Braxton Morrison, President, and Co-Founder of CISM. CISM began holding interventions for first responders in 2017, since then they have obtained their 501 (c)3, have an active board, and numerous other certifications that support area first responders.

Members of Vinton’s P.E.O. Chapter HG met at Cindy Elwick’s home on Saturday, December 4th for a Christmas Brunch. Guests of honor were Darcy Duart and Shelby Stender who were recently awarded P.E.O. Program for Continuing Education Grants from the P.E.O. Sisterhood and sponsored by Chapter HG. Each grant was for $3000.Duart, from Urbana is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in nursing.

Vinton, City of Lights continues the annual Deck the House contest this year. The Contest also includes businesses, so don't forget to vote for these competitors as well. Organized by Vinton Parks and Recreation, there are two categories of voting in the residential contests. There will be three winners for the Griswold Display. For those wondering what that means, according to the urban dictionary, it is "a house or display that has been decorated with way too many holiday lights, to be almost blinding.
