Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter provided Petting Zoo at Party in the Park

FFA members guided horses and walked along kids for safety during the horse rides. By: Co-Reporter, Isabel MullinexDuring the annual Party in the Park, the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA chapter provided a petting zoo and pony rides for kids. The petting zoo was on Saturday, June 18th and members brought in their animals and [st] pens out. The petting zoo consisted of cows, goats, chickens, rabbits, a sheep, and of course, horses. The pony rides started at 11:00 A.

Injured Eagle found north of Vinton

Pat Jorgensen of the DNR holds a young injured Bald Eagle just north of Vinton Just north of town on the Gary and Jill Marlow property, a young eagle was found unable to fly. The Marlows called Pat Jorgensen of the Department of Natural Resources to come to the property to rescue the bird. Jorgensen has been with the Iowa DNR for 32 years, and has been a State Conservation Officer with the  DNR in the Benton/Linn County area since 2002.

Southern edge of Dysart hit by tornado

A common sight in Dysart on Thursday with several roofs being damaged from the tornado The city of Dysart was spared a massive hit on Wednesday night. Of course, you'd think that if you weren't one of the homes hit by the tornado. At last count, ABC reported that there was a string of 27 tornadoes that went through Iowa, one of which touched down in the southernmost part of Dysart. Driving between Dysart and Vinton, you can see where the tornado had touched down outside of town in the cornfields.

Jeanette Henry named as new VFW Department of Iowa Auxiliary President

Members of VFW Auxiliary  Local, District and Department of Iowa gathered to congratulate Henry Jeanette Henry has served proudly as part of the VFW for many years. She is the President of the Smith-Geater VFW Post #8884 Auxiliary but as of June 6, 2021 she added the Department of Iowa VFW Auxiliary President position to her resume'. This is the first time that Vinton has had this honor.Jeanette Henry was honored on Saturday at the new VFW Post 8884 and was joined by several members of VFW Auxiliary Local, District and Department of Iowa from all across the state.

Vinton Lions New Members-Installation Officers FY22

Vinton Lions Club wrapped up their 100 Anniversary Celebration with a lunch and visiting Lions dignitaries at the Vinton Country Club on July 7th. Keynote Speaker, Past International Director Mark Hintzmann from Watertown, WI entertained Lions members with his experiences as a Lion through the years that have impacted him and elevated his commitment to membership.

Highest Lions honor given by organization in State of Iowa presented to: Alan Woodhouse, treasurer Lions Club of Vinton, Iowa, organized July 5, 1921-only four years after first Lions club ever was formed. As such Vinton Lions Club is one of oldest in Iowa-and worldwide!Vinton Lions Charter Night held Monday, October 17, 1921, with 30 charter members. Among them was F. E. (Francis) Palmer, 11th superintendent of Iowa School for the Blind. Four years later, Helen Keller gave Lions their primary mission, urging them to be "Knights of the Blind.

State Catalyst Grants to Benton County Cities Now Total $300,000

Benton Development Group worked with the cities of Atkins and Belle Plaine to submit applications for the most recent round of Catalyst Grants and each community received $100,000 in the most recent awards. The two $100,000 grants in the most recent round, and a previous grant award to Shellsburg, raises the Catalyst Grant total received by Benton County communities to $300,000.
