The VS Vikettes won again on the golf course, defeating Independence in a dual at Independence on Thursday afternoon. Senior Lauren Tandy (44) was the medalist and sophomore Alex Maynard earned her first medal, finishing second with a 48.

VINTON TODAY - April 14th, 2016 11:55 am

Nearly 50 young people (including some girls) have participated in the first-ever Vinton-Shellsburg 7-on-7 football passing league.
Those who have not yet signed up are welcome to attend upcoming sessions, says league organizer Andy May. There is no cost for participants, said May.
To address some confusion about the schedule, May is announcing the tentative dates for the rest of the league events.

Grant Noren led the way Tuesday carding a 36 as the Vikings defeated South Tama 150 – 214. The course is in great shape and the temperature was perfect to get the season started. Tyler Stueck was the runner-up medalist carding a 37. Austin Bohnsack shot 38 and Tanner Cummings finished the team score with 39. Bryce Shaw carded a 40 and Mike DeLong shot 41.

Wolf Creek wins two more vs. Iowa City Trojans (28-21) and Marion (42-21)!

There are no cancellations for rugby matches, you just play in the elements.
All matches were played in Iowa City on Friday night. Wolf Creek is now 4-0.
Iowa City plays in the big school class and Wolf Creek composed of Union High athletes is small school class.

His first-ever visit to Benton County Speedway ended with Ricky Thornton Jr.'s second $1,000 Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified Frostbuster feature win in as many nights.
Thornton followed the Saturday checkers at Boone Speedway with the Sunday night victory in a star-filled field at Vinton. He led the last 21 of 25 laps, outrunning Kyle Brown, himself a two-time Frostbuster winner in the race to the checkers.

Senior Olivia Walker led the VS girls golf team to victory over Solon and West Delaware on Thursday.
Walker shot a 51 for the Vikings, who edged Solon by 1 stroke.

Steve Berry's Youth bowlers bowled well in the City Bowling tournament at May City in Cedar Rapids earlier this spring. Each year our youth bowlers are provided an opportunity to compete against others bowlers outside of our home bowling alley. This provides our bowlers the ability to compete against their peers and allows them to see what it is like to bowl in another bowling alley.

The 22nd annual Hogan Memorial will be held Sunday, July 3 at Benton County Speedway.
Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds headline the holiday weekend special in Vinton. The Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot-qualifying feature pays a minimum of $1,250 to win, with lap money, a halfway leader bonus and hard charger awards making for a potential payday of more than $4,000.

Union athletes are among players in one of the state's fastest growing organized sports: Rugby.
Friday night in Altoona, the Wolf Creek Knights opened up with convincing wins over Urbandale 35-14, and SE Polk "B" 49-14. In the first contest, Isaiah Vaughan and Jordan Schmitz each scored twice and Sam Johnson scored once.
