Vikings Hyland, Radeke still in contention for State medals

Luke Radeke, Coach James Locke and Nick Hyland appeared at a pep rally Wednesday afternoon. Despite first round losses on Thursday, both Nick Hyland (145) and Luke Radeke (106) advanced with wins in their first wrestleback matches Thursay evening. Hyland lost his first round match to seeded Brady Brott (Clarion-Goldfield-Dows), 3-1. Hyland then defeated Jaret Probasco (South Tama), 7-3. Radeke lost his first round match to Kole Hanson, Atlantic, by a score of 7-5.

VS boys return to State Bowling contest with tournament win; Vikettes 3rd

Viking bowlers with their coaches and their 2016 State banner. The Vinton-Shellsburg boys bowling team has earned its second straight trip to the State Bowling Contest, despite bowling a team score that is about 150 points below their average, during Tuesday's qualifying meet in Vinton. The Vikings finished first with 2,807 total points at Berry's Lanes, with Waterloo Columbus finishing second. West Delaware was third; Dubuque Wahlert, fourth; Cascade, fifth; and Denver, sixth.

Viking bowling teams do well vs. Tripoli

Both Varsity teams competed against Tripoli tonight ans were successful once again.   The girls were led by senior, Alyssa Bunge, who was definitely in a zone with a 394 series and sophomore, Taylor Berry with a great 234 game.  The boys were on fire in the individual games as the scores show with senior, Cole Garwood, leading the way with a 272 and a 500 series.

Vinton-Shellsburg senior Nick Hyland (145 pounds) and freshman Luke Radeke (106 pounds) will wrestle Thursday in the first round of the Class 3A State Wrestling Meet. Both Vikings advanced to State after finishing second in Districts at Clear Creek-Amana on Saturday. Other Vikings who competed in Saturday's districts include: Carter Weeks, 4th, at 113; Navon Dunlop, 3rd, at 126.

Four Vikings to wrestle at Districts tomorrow

Nick Hyland (145) won first place in the sectional wrestling tournament to lead the Vikings to tomorrow's District event at Clear Creek-Amana. Other Vikings who advanced included Luke Radeke, who finished second at 106; Carter Weeks, who came in second at 113; and Navon Dunlap, who was second at 126. IMCA following record-setting 100th season with bigger, better 2016

After as record-setting centennial season, the International Motor Contest Association is on track for even bigger and better things this year. The oldest automotive racing sanctioning body in the country, IMCA will provide rules and procedures used at dirt track events in more than 30 states and Canada.  Over 9,000 drivers will compete at IMCA events held at more than 200 different race tracks in 2016.

Senior Night: Vikings reverse fortunes, defeat CPU by 13

Viking seniors received recognition before Tuesday's game. Junior Tyler Bartz led the Vikings with 20 points as the Vikings defeated Center Point-Urbana, 69-56, in Wamac basketball action on Tuesday. The Stormin' Pointers had defeated the Vikings by 13 a few weeks ago in Center Point, and came to town in first place in the Wamac West, with just one loss in conference play.  CPU looked to be continuing its winning trend early, building a 16-11 first quarter lead.

Rippel signs with Mount Mercy baseball team

Tyler Rippel with coaches Dahm and Struve, parents Jeff and Hayley and younger brother, Chase. Vinton-Shellsburg senior pitcher Tyler Rippel signed his letter of intent to play baseball next season for Coach Jack Dahm and the Mount Mercy University Mustangs. Dahm and Viking coach Jim Struve joined Rippel and his family for a signing ceremony Wednesday at VSHS.  Rippel pitched for the Vikings in last year's State Tournament, giving up just two earned runs to eventual State Champion Waverly-Shell Rock.

VPRD to host 9-Pin Adult Bowling Tournament

The Vinton Parks & Recreation Department is excited to once again be hosting our annual 9-Pin Adult Bowling Tournament at Berry’s Lanes this coming Saturday, February 13th. Not only is this tournament a ton of fun, but it also helps to raise some funding for capital improvements at our community parks. Bowling will begin at 2 PM and your $20 entry fee includes three games of bowling, shoe rental, flight prizes and a donation to the VPRD Park Improvement Capital Fund.
