Seaton, Leyden pitch complete games as Vikings sweep Mustangs in Independence

Kody Seaton pitched a complete game in Vikings' 3-2 win in nightcap in Independence. It was just the fifth frame of a seven-inning contest, but the game was on the line as Viking pitcher Kody Seaton faced the next Mustang batter.  The score was tied at two, and the home team had runners on second and third with nobody out.  Seaton responded to the challenge by striking out that batter, and then retiring the next eight Mustangs.

Vikettes 2nd at North Butler Invitational

 “We came into this hoping to get second and that’s what we got.”   Those were the words of Vinton-Shellsburg head girls’ softball coach Bari Parrott after the Vikettes (11-10 for the year) grabbed the runner-up finish Saturday at the North Butler Invitational at Allison.   The Vikettes scrambled to a 6-1 in over Janesville in the first round, then added a 5-0 shutout of Lake Mills in the second to advance to the title game against the host – and 4th-rated team in Class 1A – Bearcats.

Break in rain allows racing to continue Sunday in Vinton

Despite a week of heavy rain, Sunday's weather allowed the track to dry and racing to continue. Vikings lose two close ones at Williamsburg

Carson Struve connects for a single in Williamsburg Thursday. In a season where most of their victories were come-from-behind wins and most of their losses came with the tying or winning run at the plate, the Vikings rode home from Williamsburg Thursday night pondering many missed opportunities.  The Vinton-Shellsburg baseball team lost a double-header, 5-4 and 5-3, while playing on one of the nicest high school baseball fields in the state.

Leyden has complete game as V-S sweeps Marion, 6-2 and 10-7

Coach Jim Struve talks offense with Clint Ferguson, Carson Struve and Matt DeVries vs. Marion. Taylor Leyden has been the Vikings team leader for Vinton-Shellsburg this baseball season. He leads the cheering in the dugout, and keeps the pitchers motivated as he plays third base and leads off. But on Wednesday evening, Leyden led the Vikings in a new way, with his pitching arm. He pitched a complete game for the home team as the Vikings defeated Marion, 6-2.

Vikettes take a wild, weird sweep from Marion Monday night

After spending the better part of the day clearing gallons of water off of the playing surface at Thole Field, Coach Bari Parrott’s Vinton-Shellsburg Vikettes were not about to be denied their prize Monday night, even if it took until Tuesday morning to do it They got it in the form of a sweep of their first WaMaC Conference sweep of the season.

VS rally gives sophomore Springer a victory in varsity debut at Mount Vernon

Sophomore Alex Springer got the victory in his varsity debut after VS rallied from 5 behind. The third sophomore pitcher of the game threw two scoreless innings to end a four-game losing streak for the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings Friday evening.  Alex Springer entered the game in the sixth inning, making his varsity debut against the Mount Vernon Mustangs. He held them scoreless for two innings, while the Vikings continued their comeback.

Vikings seek to end losing streak at Mount Vernon Friday evening

Taylor Leyden hit a 3-run homer in the first inning vs. Beckman; he was walked in his next at-bat. The week started well for the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings on the baseball diamond, as they defeated Center Point-Urbana, 12-2, in five innings Monday. But CPU came back to win the next game, 6-3. But on Wednesday night, the Vikes lost two at home to Class 2A Dyersville Beckman, 12-11 and 17-0.  In the second game, the Blazers sent all nine to the plate twice in the third inning, as a combination of hits and errors led to 13 runs.

The Legacy of Baseball's Dummy

Today's sports column is especially for the young men and women of Vinton whose games bring their parents to the local ball diamonds, whether its Park and Rec league, the USSSA teams that play at Marvin Lindsey Field, or the high school baseball and softball teams. All of you young players are part of a tradition of baseball that has lasted nearly 150 years.
